TAT Special-BM-CL,
Custom Line
Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Model

To continue our 30th anniversary celebration, Caparison introduces the TAT-Special-BM-CL, the second limited-edition release in our exclusive series. With just 24 pieces to be madeavailable worldwide, this model offers a refined evolution of the classic TAT-Special.

The guitar features a striking Burl Maple Radial Grain top, expertly shaped into the distinctive TAT curve, sitting atop a solid Australian Blackwood back. This combination brings a rich tonal complexity—brilliant highs balanced by warm yet focused low end. The 5-piece maple and walnut neck-through construction guarantees remarkable stability, resonance, and sustain.

Equipped with a newly developed PH-R-CA4 bridge pickup and a SH-27FC neck pickup, the TAT-Special-BM-CL offers superb articulation and dynamic tonality across all 27 frets. The Rotary Switch Mode gives smooth, intuitive control over your sound. Stainless steel jumbo frets, an ebony fingerboard with Luminlay side markers, and a carefully considered finish to compliment the natural character of the wood both visually and sonically.

Available in Amber Matt and Black Amber Matt finishes, each guitar features a gold Custom Line logo and a solid ebony truss rod cover. The TAT-Special-BM-CL marks thirty years of outstanding craftsmanship — a limited edition that perfectly balances tradition with precision.

Additional Information

TAT-Special Curved Top – Unlike conventional guitars that set the neck angle relative to the body, the TAT-Special determines the neck angle through the instrument’s distinctive arched body top. This design brings the neck physically closer to the player, creating a more natural and comfortable playing posture. The effect is especially noticeable when playing higher registers from the 12th fret upward, where access and ergonomics are significantly improved.

PH-R-CA4 Bridge Pickup – Developed specifically for the TAT-Special and based on Caparison’s original PH-R design, the PH-R-CA4 bridge pickup uses an Alnico 4 center magnet to deliver a wide tonal range with flat, well-balanced output characteristics. The pickup is mounted on Caparison’s proprietary three-screw baseplate system, allowing precise positioning of each coil relative to the strings. Compared to conventional two-screw mounts, this design improves tonal balance and output while ensuring the pickup remains stable and unmoved, even during aggressive playing.

SH-27FC Neck Pickup – On 27-fret guitars, the neck pickup must be positioned closer to the center pickup, which often prevents standard neck pickups from producing an authentic neck-position tone. The SH-27FC was developed specifically to solve this issue. Even on a 27-fret instrument, it delivers the warmth, clarity, and character expected from a true neck pickup position.

Rotary Switch Mode – When the 3-way pickup selector (lever switch) is set to the center position, Rotary Switch Mode is activated. In this mode, the 4-position rotary switch selects the active pickup combination. When the selector is set to either the bridge or neck position, the rotary switch is bypassed, and both pickups operate in full humbucking mode. (For detailed pickup combinations, please refer to the control diagram.)

Schaller S-FRT II Tremolo Bridge – This high-performance tremolo bridge by Schaller features a unique construction in which the bridge body and knife edges are separate components. The dual-sided knife edges are precisely machined for excellent return-to-zero performance, minimizing unnecessary movement from string vibration and greatly enhancing tuning stability. Made from high-hardness steel, the knife edges offer outstanding wear resistance and long-term durability. Because the knife edges are not integrated into the bridge body, the design also reduces harsh metallic overtones, contributing to a smoother, more refined tonal response.

Gotoh HAP Tuners – The Dellinger model features a 15-degree headstock angle, allowing the strings to sit low against the locking nut without the need for a string retainer bar. It is equipped with Gotoh HAP tuners, which allow the height of each string post to be individually adjusted according to string gauge. This ensures optimal string positioning at the locking nut and minimizes tuning changes when the strings are locked, resulting in improved tuning stability.

Terminal Wiring – To prevent external noise interference, conductive shielding paint is applied inside both the pickup and control cavities, which are connected using a terminal-based grounding system. The control panel also features an aluminium backing plate to further enhance shielding effectiveness. This terminal wiring system not only improves noise resistance but also simplifies maintenance, making electronic component replacement and servicing quick and straightforward.

Custom Switching

The TAT Special features a rotary switch mode. When the 3-way pickup switch is in the center, the 4-position rotary switch selects the active pickup combination (see diagram). In the bridge or neck positions, the rotary switch is disabled, and the selected pickup outputs in humbucking mode.

Through and Through

The Caparison through-neck is engineered for speed, comfort, and fatigue-free play, while its seamless design maximizes sustain and resonance. This unique construction takes full advantage of a neck-through design: the natural curve of the body top serves as the neck angle, bringing the neck closer to the player. The result is a more natural playing posture, especially when reaching higher frets beyond the 12th. A slanted neck joint heel further enhances playability, ensuring effortless access to the upper register.
